Description
Mondays, June 10th, 17th, 24th, July 1st, 15th, 22nd. 6-9pm ET.
*Note we will skip July 8th while I teach my Painting in Paradise workshop.
This class will talk about the intersection of words and art, in a way that will deepen your painting experience. We’ll work on:
- Haiga (painting combined with haiku). You can write your own text or illustrate someone else’s. We’ll work on pairing text to image, and designing a page containing both.
- Storyboarding. A storyboard is a graphic organizer that displays images in sequence to previsualize some kind of time-dependent media. You can storyboard a short comic, a graphic novel, or the movie you’ve always dreamed of making.
- Illustrated story book. We’ll talk about what publishers want, how to make a page count that works, and do one sample illustration in class. You can work from your own text or from someone else’s.
- The illustrated poem. We’ll choose one visual from an existing poem and illustrate it in paint.
- Designing type into a painting. We’ll focus on ‘greeking’, painting real letters and signage, and how to integrate type into an abstract painting.
- The travelling sketch book. Better than a diary, this is a pictorial record of your travels. It can be done in ink, watercolor, or colored pens.
Technical skill in your chosen media is assumed; this class is about expanding our thinking about painting instead of learning technique.
