Vineyard

$5,072.00

Dr. Konstantin Frank was a pioneering winemaker in the Finger Lakes region of New York. Born in Odessa, Ukraine, he came to the US in 1951. Despite having a PhD in viticulture, he took a job as a dishwasher in New York until he could move to the Cornell University Geneva Experiment Station in 1953.

Failed attempts to plant vinifera varieties in the Finger Lakes were blamed on the bitter cold weather. Frank knew it was possible with the grafting techniques that he developed. At the start his ideas were dismissed but by 1962 he was producing wine from his vineyard in Hammondsport.

Dr. Frank’s winery is now run by his grandson, but Frank winery vineyards are still notable for their immaculate pruning. This is the view across one located in Pulteney, NY. It’s a painting of generous proportion, modelled in delicate greens and violets, with a beautiful gilded deep scoop frame. It would make an excellent signature piece in any house with liberal light and space.
