Rainstorm on Lake Huron

Iron Bridge, Ontario is a hamlet on the North Channel along the north shore of Lake Huron. This is the area known as the Algoma District, which is intimately connected with Canada’s Group of Seven painters. As a total fangirl of the Group of Seven and Tom Thompson, I was excited to paint there.

It was a horridly chilling, rainy day when we pulled up to a rest stop along the water. The wind was blowing so hard that I had to tie my easel to the SUV. It was simply impossible to paint large, so I clipped a small board to my easel and got down to it.

The funny thing is, the painting came out well. It has that brooding quality of northern waters at the end of autumn.

In 2016, my daughter Mary and I set off across Alaska and Canada on a Great White North Adventure, which you can read about starting here. We arrived in Anchorage at the beginning of September and got home in mid-October. In between, we visited every province but PEI (been there, done that), and Yukon Territory. In retrospect, it might have made more sense to do this during the summer, since Alaska and Canada threw a mess of strange weather at us.
