There are certain landforms in Sedona that are iconic, and this is one of them: Cathedral Rock from Chavez Ranch Road. Cathedral Rock is a majestic sandstoneĀ butte, and one of the most-photographed sights inĀ the country, let alone in Sedona. That makes it difficult to say something new in a painting.

Why not abstract it and its foreground trees, I thought.

The idea that anything in Northern Arizona was once marine is kind of mind-blowing, but Cathedral Rock and the other redrock formations in this area were carved from sandstone formed fromĀ sand dunesĀ near the shoreline of an ancientĀ sea.
