Why do you do what you do?

It is possible to be a successful woman artist and mother, if one has an exceptional husband, good time-management skills, and an iron will.

Yesterday I was reveling in the simplicity of my job. I had planned no deep thinking; it would be a day alone with my brushes.
That never works. ā€œWhy do you do what you do?ā€ asked a regular reader.
The easy answer is that itā€™s the only thing I know how to do. A little honesty compels me to admit that this isnā€™t entirely true. I can write. I could retire if I want. Clearly, something besides necessity drives me.
In fact, my reader sensed that. ā€œWhy do you teach, travel all over the place, produce as much work as you do?ā€ she continued. ā€œIs working at that pace a habit, or something deeper?ā€

Yes, I was raised to work hard, and itā€™s an ingrained habit. Still, I do take time off. A chance conversation with a Mennonite contractor years ago turned me into a Sabbatarian. He explained what a tremendous gift a regularly-scheduled Sabbath day was. There are a few weekends a year I canā€™t take off, but in general, youā€™ll find me working six days and resting on the seventh.
I like painting and I like being on the road. I like the challenge of sizing up new places and trying to reformat them to a 12X16 canvas.
But mostly, I work like this because I can. Itā€™s a pleasure and a shock to be free of day-to-day responsibility for others. Yesterday, I mentioned a Tracey Eminquote about parenting. Here it is in full:
I would have been either 100% mother or 100% artist. Iā€™m not flaky and I donā€™t compromise. Having children and being a motherā€¦ It would be a compromise to be an artist at the same time. I know some women can. But thatā€™s not the kind of artist I aspire to be. There are good artists that have children. Of course there are. They are called men. Itā€™s hard for women. Itā€™s really difficult, they are emotionally torn. Itā€™s hard enough for me with my cat.
When I first started painting full time, another woman artist told me much the same thing. The evidence supported her statement. Most artists (of either gender) in our circle were childless. Those with children also had wives who supported both their family and their art careers.

That realization came close to derailing me. I was struggling to make enough time for my kids and art, but the historical reality seemed to be that women with children would always be second-rate painters.
Iā€™m glad I didnā€™t learn that before the kids were irrevocable. Theyā€™re certainly the best work Iā€™ve ever done.
Now that Iā€™m beyond child-care, I think itā€™s a case where history is not necessarily destiny. Gender roles have changed tremendously in the last century. It is possible for a woman to combine competent child-rearing and any career, provided she has an exceptional husband, good time-management skills, and an iron will.
But the question my reader asked is an important one. There are many easier ways to live. Why do we do what we do?

My flagging energy has been at war with the calendar. Two weeks from tomorrow I fly to Scotland for a wedding. That pretty much marks the end of my working summer, although I do have one event after that. That doesnā€™t mean I stop painting or that the crowds mysteriously evaporate, but the crush of people lets up a bit after Labor Day.
I stopped by to see a friend on my way home on Saturday. ā€œIā€™m tired, hot and cranky,ā€ I told her.
ā€œLike youā€™ve been the last three times I saw you,ā€ she replied.

I can see it in my work. I painted three things over the weekend in Camden. The best of these, a little study of an anchor, didnā€™t get finished. The one with the greatest promiseā€”a tiny tender sheltering under the bow of the Mercantileā€”didnā€™t work. I should have known when I sketched it five times without a good composition that I was on the wrong track. Instead, I tried to force it to happen on the canvas. Without the Mercantile looming over it, it was just another dinghy.
Can I fix that in the studio? Possibly; Iā€™ll try today. In fact, I need some serious time to finish up all the half-done work thatā€™s waiting for me.

Most of us work long days during painting events. I also blog about them, which usually adds an hour or two to my working day. There are some dead giveaways that I need a rest:
  1. The bottom of my backpack starts looking like the bottom of my purse, a collection of flotsam and jetsam that has escaped its proper places;
  2. My ā€˜filterā€™ gets jarred loose and I say things I usually keep to myself;
  3. I gain weight;
  4. My composition is uninspired;
  5. I fight a dehydration headache and am too dumb to fix it with water;
  6. My house and car get ratty.
Iā€™ve said many times that people should take at least a day off every week. Rest is a great gift. ā€œThe Sabbath was made for mankind, and not mankind for the Sabbath,ā€ Jesus said. Do I follow that advice? Only fitfully, Iā€™m afraid. Today I have a sore throat and headache, and I think itā€™s just my body telling me to drop the pace down a notch.

Iā€™m not the only person getting tired. I can hear it in the slow but steady increase in beeping horns as I walk to the Rockport post office at midday. Our tolerance for others is fraying, ever so slightly.
People ask me why I blog when it adds more work to my day. The nicest part of the weekend was a visit by reader Fay Terry of Pinehurst, NC. On Friday, she joined Renee Lammers and me on the docks to paint. Yes, social media has its downside, but its ability to connect like-minded people is invaluable.

What work are we doing here?

Getting there. It should be done tomorrow, I swear.
Iā€™ve been dogged by illness this whole winter, but by the grace of God something is coming together for my upcoming show at the Davison Gallery at Roberts Wesleyan. I promised the gallery director a postcard image this week, and a postcard image she shall have.
I wish Iā€™d named this show ā€œBlood,ā€ because thatā€™s been the prevailing motif. Blood of the Lamb, hemorrhaging, red underpaintingā€”itā€™s all been a bloody mess. Cancer has owned my body since November. Iā€™m finally feeling better, but when my doctors demand my presence (which is often) I drop my brush and go. That happened again yesterday.
I am, generally, a pretty neat painter. But when I get close to a deadline, that all falls apart.
If you aren’t in the doctor grind, you donā€™t realize that every half-hour visit uses up hours of the patientā€™s time. A pedicure and good hair are talismans against loss of dignity, so they must be attended to before you can go.
ā€œBeer is proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy,ā€ is erroneously attributed to Benjamin Franklin, who preferred wine. So do I, especially after a long day.
Home by noon, I was in my studio by 1 PM. At 3 PM, a friend stopped by. This friend has tended me through the winter, bringing me dinner, talking me out of my hole, cheering on my work. Yesterday she needed to talk, so I needed to listen. This is the work to which God truly calls us.
