Age of Sail

September 18-22.

Paint aboard schooner American Eagle

Our June sail coincides with the Summer Solstice, which in Maine means long hours of golden light on the water. The lobster fleet will be hard at work, and these long evenings are perfect for capturing the colors of summer.

Autumn, with its flaming colors and earlier sunsets, is a delightful time to sail on the Maine coast. The ocean is slow to cool down in the fall, but the foliage is spectacular. It’s especially beautiful from the water, with the reds of the blueberries and trees contrasting with the dark spruces and infinite blues of the sea.

This year we'll be sailing with Captain Tyler King aboard the historic schooner American Eagle. We’ll step back in time and enjoy a leisurely cruise along the coast of Maine, sailing where the wind blows and recording our impressions in watercolor journals.

Everything you need is provided, including:

• Professional quality QoR watercolor paints in a portable travel palette
• Two Strathmore cold-press watercolor tablets
• Strathmore Visual Journal Bristol notebook
• Waterbrushes
• Pencil
• Micropen
• Water cup
• Spray bottle

(Occasionally, suppliers change, but I will never skimp on quality.)

The trip lasts four days. Lighthouses, wildlife, and unspoiled scenery are part of every trip. The boat is a true relic of the Age of Sail, but it’s been updated so you have a comfortable berth, fresh linens, modern heads and a fresh-water shower.

Every meal is lovingly prepared by the cook and his mess mate. That includes a lobster bake, which might be at sea or on shore, depending on where we end up. “I want to go again, just for the food,” said student Mary W.

Is painting on a moving boat even possible?

Yes, and it’s fascinating. The water, sky and shoreline are constantly changing.

Who’s invited?

This workshop is aimed at watercolor or gouache painters, particularly those with an interest in the sea or sailing. No experience? You’re very welcome; we’ve got everything you need to get started. Carol Douglas has almost 20 years’ experience teaching students of all levels in watercolor, oils, acrylics and pastels.

“This was the best painting instruction I have ever had. Carol’s advice in color mixing was particularly eye-opening. Her explanations are clear and easy to understand. She is very approachable and supportive. I would take this course again in a heartbeat.” (Carol T.)
