SEPTEMBER 15-19, 2024.

New Year, New Focus: Join us for a unique and unforgettable watercolor workshop aboard the historic schooner American Eagle. This year, we’ll be focusing on Maine’s beautiful and unique coastal villages. From the boat, you’ll get a perspective on Maine’s coastline that you can’t get any other way.

This four-day workshop is perfect for painters of all levels. You’ll learn how to capture the beauty of Maine’s coastline, from its dramatic cliffs and rocky shores to its charming villages and colorful buoys.

Everything you need for the workshop is provided, including:

  • Professional quality QoR watercolor paints in a portable travel palette
  • Two Strathmore cold-press watercolor tablets
  • Strathmore Visual Journal Bristol notebook
  • Waterbrushes
  • Pencil
  • Micropen
  • Water cup
  • Spray bottle

New for 2024, we’ve streamlined the registration process, making it easier to book your spot in the workshop. One registration covers painting instruction, all meals, accommodation, and the chance to participate in sailing this historic vessel.

The schooner American Eagle is a true relic of the Age of Sail, but it’s been updated so you have a comfortable berth, fresh linens, modern heads and a fresh-water shower.

Every meal is lovingly prepared by the cook and his mess mate. That includes a lobster bake, which might be at sea or on shore, depending on where we end up. “I want to go again, just for the food,” said student Mary W.

Is painting on a moving boat even possible?

Yes, and it’s fascinating. The water, sky and shoreline are constantly changing.

Description

This workshop is aimed at watercolor or gouache painters, particularly those with an interest in the sea or sailing. No experience? You’re very welcome; we’ve got everything you need to get started. Carol Douglas has 20+ years’ experience teaching students of all levels in watercolor, oils, acrylics and pastels.

“Carol makes the learning process for painting so quick, easy and painless. Her way with words simplifies the techniques of watercolor and provides actionable steps towards improvement. The schooner workshop was a particular favorite as it was full of daily midcoast Maine magic! Each day was a complete experience with photogenic views providing us with ample subjects for our plein air painting lessons. The chef-prepared meals were always something to look forward to. And I will never forget enjoying morning coffee on the deck of the schooner while watching the ocean fog move over the water and burn off to reveal coastal evergreens and craggy cliffs.” (Terri Lea Smith)
