On September 7, I collected an SUV in Anchorage, AK. Its owner assured me that it was old but sound. Its mechanical problems would dog us across the country, but it survived the trip.
After several abortive starts, my daughter Mary and I headed north to the Dawson Highway. We traveled into the Arctic Circle, where I painted in a light snow. We then headed south toward the Al-Can, detouring over the Top of the World Highway so we could cross the Yukon River at Dawson City.
Mary was showing signs of mononucleosis. She slept in the car while I painted and drove, and slept while I slept. Our forward progress became fitful. At Whitehorse we took a day off to sit in a hot spring, hoping to sweat out our various ailments.
We picked up the Trans-Canada Highway at Jasper and headed across the prairies. North of Brandon, Manitoba, the SUV sputtered and died. Back on the road again, our path intersected with the Great Lakes at Thunder Bay. Its freighters were the first thin thread of connection to my home.
The Ottawa and St. Lawrence Rivers drew me as powerfully as the Yukon had. We spent an afternoon in the autumn sun on the Île d’Orléans, where Mary attempted to teach me French as I painted. Our passage to Newfoundland coincided with Hurricane Matthew’s landfall on Thanksgiving Day. Our trip ended as it started: in snow.
